As soon as I stepped into the Omni Shoreham hotel in Washington, D.C. I knew that it was one of those hotels that’s more than just a place to sleep. This AAA Four Diamond luxury resort is a treat for families or girlfriends visiting the District looking for relaxation, comfort, and history, all in one setting.
From the time you pull up to the valet-only parking area to the minute you walk into the Shoreham’s grand historic lobby, you know you’re in for something special. There’s so much going on around you (and I mean this in a nice way), that you have to just stop, pause, and allow your eyes and ears to take it all in. The chandeliers, furniture, floral accents, column banners, door men, bus boys, front desk attendees, concierge, and international foot traffic are fleeting visual distractions from the classical architecture that defines the lobby space. Yet, all of these elements, in some part, contribute to the thought that runs through your mind: “Wow, this place is nice.”
I visited the Shoreham to experience one of the Omni’s various getaway packages, just in time for the start of the summer. The Girlfriends Reminisce Getaway had me and my BF’s names written all over it – relaxation, hanging out, and shopping. Everything that’s “going on” inside the hotel almost trumps the gamut of things happening outside of it. The attractions around the corner from the Shoreham’s doors, surprisingly became secondary “to do’s” for my weekend.
SERVICE
The service at the hotel was impeccable. No wonder it was named one of the Washingtonian Magazine’s Great Places to Work. Our waiter from the Robert’s restaurant told us he had been working there for 20 years and said that he loves “his hotel.” He mentioned a female co-worker who has been an employee for 30 years, a rare occurrence these days. From the bottom to the top, just about every employee that I encountered was not only pleasant, helpful and friendly, but exuded a subtle pride to be working at the resort.
AMENITIES
For families, the Shoreham works well. An outdoor pool, large rooms, milk and cookie room service, a cafe, onsite restaurant, ample indoor and outdoor seating, hammocks, a garden area with plenty of grass to run and play, are all convenient amenities for traveling families. In addition, the hotel is just a few blocks away from the D.C. zoo and across the street from one of the D.C. tour buses.
ACCOMMODATIONS
For girlfriends, the Shoreham is the ultimate getaway in the heart of a busy city. I was definitely spoiled by my accommodations. My suite had enough space to throw a party, a formal dinner, and a book club meeting, all at once (although I didn’t). One of seven presidential suites, the Abraham Lincoln Suite, measures well over 900 square feet. A foyer, kitchen, living room, dining room, sitting room, balcony, and large king suite define the space. Classic decor and furnishings help to make it cozy.
The king bed in the suite looked much larger than my own king bed. This might be a product of the four large down pillows, 800 thread count sheets and the silky soft comforter. If I had to describe the bed in one word, I’d call it plush. I slept quite comfortably with no thoughts of the mattress being too soft or too hard. As Goldilocks would say, “It was just right.”
Once my friend and I settled down for the evening, we enjoyed Thai food at the dining room table and wine in our robes on the couch (just as we had envisioned in our minds).
If you’re visiting D.C. and are looking to catch your breath with a friend in a luxurious historic setting, the Omni is an excellent choice. Forget about calories, forget about budgets, forget about the noise of the city and enjoy everything that the Shoreham has to offer. I know we did.

The Omni provided me with a 2-night stay at the Shoreham hotel in D.C. to perform this review.

ABOUT NEW JERSEY
Many people have a narrow view of NJ. They think crowded NYC suburbs or they think the Shore. There’s SO much more! One of the things I love most about where I live is its proximity to a number of diverse areas. I’m within an hour and a half drive of New York City, Philadelphia, the ocean, and the mountains! Some of our favorite family places are: Ringing Rocks Park, The Crayola Factory, Delaware Water Gap, Grounds for Sculpture, Sesame Place Theme Park, Bowman’s Hill Tower, Delaware River Tubing.
WHERE TO STAY
I live in a rural area. There are lots of great B&Bs around here, but they aren’t typically family friendly. If your family is looking for something other than a traditional hotel experience, I’d highly recommend the Great Wolf Lodge in the nearby Pocono Mountains, or Lambertville House. Crystal Springs Resort is further north, but another amazing place to stay.
TRAVEL STARTS
My parents would often take “Sunday drives” when I was younger. We would get in the car and just drive around. I grew up in the Adirondack Mountains of New York state where there’s so much to see. While I didn’t recognize it when I was younger, these Sunday drives had a big impact on my love of road trips. I’ve loved traveling since I was young, but I think I only recently realized how important it is to me to travel with my kids and cultivate adventurous spirits!
WHAT PARENTS SHOULD KNOW/KEEP IN MIND WHEN TRAVELING WITH KIDS
I think the most important thing for parents to remember is to build in extra time! Be prepared for the unexpected. You may plan three hours at a zoo and find your that your kids just can’t tear themselves away from the peacocks! My daughter recently spent over an hour following a peacock around a zoo. She named it and talked to it. And I was able to accommodate her interest because I hadn’t over-scheduled our trip. And I got some great photos! 🙂
BIGGEST CHALLENGE TRAVELING WITH KIDS
Fighting siblings! Arrrgghhh! I often wish I had a sound-proof barrier I could put up between my kids in the back seat.
ALL THE PLACES SHANNON’S LIVED AND TRAVELED
I’ve lived in upstate NY and northwestern NJ. Outside the USA, I’ve traveled to London, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Montreal, cruised to Bahamas and Western Caribbean (Haiti, Grand Cayman, Jamaica), and spent a day in Tijuana, Mexico. Within the USA, I’ve been all over the Eastern US, from Maine to Florida. I’ve been to Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, San Diego, skiing in the mountains of Utah and Colorado, and driven across country from NJ to Utah and from Chicago to NJ. Wow – writing all this out makes me feel so lucky!
FAVORITE DESTINATION SO FAR
That’s a tough question. I have several favorites for different reasons. I really love cruising. It’s such a fun, relaxed way to travel. The downside is you don’t get to really “see” the destinations you stop at because you’re typically taking the “Americanized” excursions. But it’s a great way to get a glimpse of several different locations. I absolutely love the Rocky Mountains in every season of the year. And Disney World is also very high on my list of favorites!
MOST SPECTACULAR RESORT/HOTEL
Royal Caribbean cruise line is the best “resort” I’ve stayed in. The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas is pretty spectacular, too.
WHERE TO NEXT
We’ll be driving from NJ to Charlotte, NC in June. Haven’t quite figured out the itinerary yet, but we’ll spend a few days in Charlotte and then make several stops on the way back north. We’re also hoping to get to Niagara Falls this year. We’re going back to Disney World (I’ll be running the Disney Princess Half Marathon) in February 2013. But I’m most excited about our plan to live in Colorado or Utah for 6 months in 2014!
Thanks to Shannon for being a part of this week’s Mom Traveler Spotlight.
This week’s Mom Traveler Spotlight is on Monique Rubin. Monique (@monique_rubin) and I are Twitter buddies and I’ve enjoyed hearing about her life as a traveling mom and an ExPat living in the Netherlands. I’ve never told her this but that is the one European city that I really wanted to make home after living there for a little while. If the internet was then what it is today, I would’ve. Anyway, enough about me.
Monique has two beautiful daughters, ages 8 and 10 years old. You can catch her when she’s not running through Europe doing a race at www.motravels.com. Here’s what she has to say about travel:
ABOUT THE NETHERLANDS
NEMO is the biggest science museum in Netherlands, full of interactive activities and an absolute must. I also recommend the Anne Frank museum for families with children mature enough to grasp the subject matter.
During the spring, take the family to the Keukenhof to see the tulips and other beautiful flowers and no visit to Holland would be complete without a boat ride on the canals and a bike tour.
For accommodations, I like Hotel Zandbergen, which is located on a quiet residential neighborhood across from Amsterdam’s Vondelpark. Another great place to stay is the Park Plaza Victoria. Located across the street from Amsterdam’s Central Station – it is very convenient to most of the city’s attractions.
TRAVEL STARTS
I recognized myself as a traveler at a very early age. Even before I started traveling, I knew I wanted to. I credit Prince Charles and Robin Leach with my wanderlust. (<—Love this!)
TRAVEL ADVICE FOR PARENTS
You have a lot less control than you realize. Ultimately, kids set the pace, so try to be flexible and be prepared to travel at a much slower pace. Also, don’t underestimate what your kids want to see or will enjoy.
BIGGEST CHALLENGES TRAVELING WITH KIDS
See above. I am constantly working on being flexible and traveling at a slower pace. I really wanted to do that all-day side trip to Alexandria when we went to Sharm-el-Sheik. Who knows when we’ll go back to Egypt, so we should get it all in, right? (Yes! Thought I was the only one who thought that way.) When you’re traveling with kids, not so much.
ALL THE PLACES MONIQUE’S LIVED AND TRAVELED
I’ve only lived in Holland since being a mom. BC, however, I lived in Los Angeles, where I am from, Indiana, DC and CT. As a family, we have traveled extensively throughout Europe, gone on 3 African safaris and traveled a bit in the US, mostly to visit family on the East Coast and in California.
FAVORITE DESTINATION
Some of my favorite places include Barcelona, Cape Town, Nice and London. However, if I were forced to choose just one, it would be Paris. The sight of my first European trip, and like they say, you always remember your first. It’s also where my husband proposed, so I would say Paris is my favorite destination for sentimental reasons.
MOST SPECTACULAR RESORT/HOTEL MONIQUE’S STAYED IN
The 2 Four Seasons resorts in the Maldives: Kuda Huraa and Landaa Giraavaru.
NEXT STOP
Up next are trips to a farmhouse in Tuscany, our annual family trips to France and to the States.
HOW TRAVELING HAS CHANGED MONIQUE’S WORLD VIEW
by really allowing me to see, not just say, that people ARE the same everywhere. We all want health and happiness for ourselves and our children and we want to live meaningful, productive lives. I hope that it is teaching my daughters that there are no borders, and that their place in the world is any and everywhere they choose to go or be.
On the heels of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, Europe’s ten year-running APASSIONATA horse show, makes it way to Baltimore. Horse fans will get a chance to experience APASSIONATA at the 1st Mariner Arena from June 8-June 10.
Fans from Helsinki to Prague and from Hamburg to London have fallen in love and followed Apassionata. The mounting success of the show forced the producer, Peter Massine, to turn his attention to North America. The show made its debut in Louisville, Kentucky in April, one week prior to the Kentucky Derby. And since the 137th Preakness just took place in Baltimore, horses are fresh on people’s brains.
Please note, these aren’t your competitive race horse. These are 40 trained performance horses found from all over Europe. Apassionata is said to have the equestrian community abuzz with the magic, beauty, and entertainment value of the show, perfect for any age.
